Weekend roundup

On Saturday it was the next round of the Essex League cross country at Writtle. 14 men and 10 women turned out for this local event.

Highest placed man was James Smith in 11th, followed by Alex Manton in 14th, Lee Martin 33rd, Sam Cornforth 37th, Antony Goodall 40th and Greg Deacon 45th. The men were 5th overall and the vet men 3rd.

For the ladies Liz Davies was 1st lady overall followed by Nikki Brockbank in 9th, Shannon mason in 20th and Polly Bridgman in 32nd. The ladies were 3rd and the vet ladies 1st.

75 runners set out from Cold Christmas Lane in Hertfordshire on a fairly chilly Sunday morning and would end up in High Easter after having completed  the Cold Christmas to High Easter 50k (31 mile) trail ultra.

James Bosher was first in an amazing 4.08.55, and second placed equal Jon Byford and Alex Manton finished roughly 45 minutes later in 4.53.17. Peter Chubb was first male v50 on his birthday in 5.03.46.

First lady was Paula Downing in 5.37.16.

Well done to everyone who ran, and as this was a Striders event, to all those who helped too.

Partly due to lots of cross country regulars helping or running at the Cold Christmas event, there was a poor turn out at the Ipswich 53-12 XC fixture on Sunday. The men failed to fill a team of 8, as only 6 ran and thus incurred penalties.

For the men James Smith was first Strider in 10th, followed by Tom Oliver 12th, Gary Robins 60th, Roger Gooding 118th, Mark Jeffrey 119th and Richard Taylor 128th

The women pulled together a full team and newcomer Ann Angell was first Strider in 30th, followed by Isabel Gower 49th, Kerry Marsh 57th, and Pippa Rowe-Wakeling 70th.

This meant that the incomplete men’s team incurred a penalty and meant they were last in Pool A on the day. There were no penalties for the women but they were also last on the day. We are now last in Pool A and in danger of being relegated so the captains are striving to ensure a full turn out at the remaining fixtures at Hadleigh and Halstead.

The juniors fared better and had a team of 5 runners. Dylan Robins was first Strider and 1st in his U11 age group, and was in14th place. Taylor Gooding (U11) was 71st, Jack Teddorski (spelling as per results, apologies if it is incorrect) (U15) was 86th, Jess Pugh (U11) 93rd and Ollie Teddorski (U11) 127th. The juniors are now 7th in their league.
