ITU European Duathlon Championships Damon Lawrence Race Report 16th June 2007
Weather conditions were very bad with high winds and driving rain. The course was based around Holyrood Park, air temp was also down to about 8-10 degrees, It seemed winter had returned.
he run section was 2 laps of 5km with headwind blustering into us on the downhill sections and a long 2 km climb back towards the finish/transition, Transition was difficult as bikes and railing had been blown over on several occasions.
The Bike section was in total 37kms (4 laps) there were 2 main climbs, one climb of approx 80 meters into a head wind, into the clouds and heavy rain, the descent was with a blustery wet side wind, it was very dangerous with narrow tight turns, I nearly crashed 6 or 7 times, there were some bad incidents.
The final run was again 5 km same as the first, for me and many others the race was about survival and just finishing than racing hard. It was horrible and dangerous. I was happy to cross the finish. The hardest race so far….
Results 137th of 290 total 22nd in 30-34 age group.

The Cambridge Race allowed Damon to Qualify and join the Great Britain Age groupers Team(30-34yrs)
Worlds Championships Duathlon.
Some 700 competitors in 3 waves took part on the Sunday 20th May. Air temp 25-30’C
Run course very flat, 2 laps of 4.5km (not the said 5km)
Cycle course again very flat,3 laps , 6 very tight 180 degree turns on each lap, tarmac Was very rutted. total 36.2 km (not the said 40km)

Based on average times It would have been a PB coming in under the 2 hours, shame the course was short!! Still, it has taken a week to recover!!, it was a good event.
