- Newland Spring Triathlon - (26/9/03) One final
outing before the season closed allowed a number of
Striders to give triathlon ago from Newland Spring
Primary School. The extra shortcourse to accomodate
novice and shorter evenings included a 200m swim, a 10k
cycle and either, a 3m or 0.5m run. In the hotly
contested longer event Alec Coleman took the lead at the
end of the cycle ride and consolidated with a strong run,
making it a family affair Nicky Coleman was first lady.
In the shorter event Diane Jellicoe was first lady and
first to finish. Other striders taking part were Theresa
Tremain, Dave Jellicoe & Ian Gowers.
Thanks to Barbara & Ian for hosting &
timekeeping.
- Clacton Triathlon - (21/9/03) Competitors in the
2nd Clacton Triathlon benefitted from the continuing
summer with perfect conditions. Consisting of a 1500m
swim in a pleasantly clean North Sea, a 40k bike around
Thorpe Le Sokem, Kirby Cross & Lt Clacton and then a
10k run from Holland-on-Sea to Clacton Pier and back. A
Succesful and highly recommed course for for two
competing striders with the following tmes, .
Alec Coleman - Position - Swim - Bike - Run - O/all.
Ian Gowers - Position - Swim - Bike - Run - O/all.
- London Triathlon - With 6000 competitors over two
days, and nearly 3000 in the olympic event on Sunday (3rd
August), the Royal Victoria Albert Dock and EXCEL
exhibition centre, were very busy. Although pretty hot
for the competitors the weather contributed to a
successful event.
Ian Gowers-Final Split Times were swim (1500m) 31:24 -
bike(40k) 79:32 - run(10k) 54:07 - o/all 2hr 45mins 1sec.
Club Duathlon - Despite some imaginative route
finding and much cursing, competition was strong in the
middle of the field. It was unfortunately not strong
enough to keep pace with the eventual winner Richard
Craven, who, with oustanding split times for the cycling,
scorched the course to win by almost 10 mins. Although it
was not clear whether Kevin Masons bike greasing
technique (ie cover himself in grease) contributed to him
recording the fasted run lap.
Overall Times were as follows
- 1st Richard Craven 83:46 - 7th Ivan Howlett
109:27
2nd Ian Gowers 93:54 - 8th Lindsey Broadbridge
112:40
3rd Julian Catmull 95:57 - 9th Kevin Mason 116:45
4th Mark Jeffery 96:48 - 10th Richard Taylor
118:07
5th Rob Rodie 98:27 - 11th Tony Vernon 127:19
6th Jason Praill 103:06 - 12th Janet Hill 132:03
- White Oak Triathlon - Hot conditions prevailed in
Swanley, Kent, with a large field of participants,
competition was much tougher in this longer event, and
although with different start times two striders
continued their competition. :-
Alec Coleman - Swim 9:30mins - Bike 51:42mins - Run
31:54mins - O/all 93:06mins - 69th Position.
Ian Gowers - Swim 9:09mins - Bike 50:59mins - Run
35:58mins - O/all 96:06mins - 92nd Position. from 259
competitors
- TriSport Epping Triathlon - The TriSport Epping, Try-a-Tri,
took place on 22nd June, as always the event was well
attended and well organised. Centred in and around The
Ongar Leisure Centre (swimming pool), the bike leg
followed a 2 lap triangular course through Fyfield and
Moreton, and the run, a 3 lap course on grass tracks.
Despite the threat of thunder and lightening the event
passed without any rain and a close race unfolded for two
striders. :-
Alec Coleman - Swim 6:28mins - Bike 42:18mins - Run
15:15mins - O/all 64:01mins - 9th Position.
Ian Gowers - Swim 5:14mins - Bike 42:00mins - Run
17:46mins - O/all 65:00mins - 14th Position.
- Braintree Triathlon - While all the Striders at
the Southend ½ Marathon were lining up for the off. I
was just finishing my first triathlon of the year, The
2nd Braintree Triathlon. Despite the early rain the
weather cleared and the event was a success for the
organisers and 99% of the competitors.
Unfortunately for me the twisting 3 lap run course proved
to be too disorientating and turned into a 4 lap course!.
Much cursing was done, but infact I had improved on last
years split times, and I was now back on course for the
London Triathlon.
- Basildon Triathlon - locally the first triathlon
of the season took place on 18th May, at Gloucester Park,
Basildon. The 'Off-Road' triathlon, with it's challenging
Parkland course (as Julian found last year) had a 50
strong field with two Striders taking part. Ian Williams
placing 18th in 53mins 28secs, and Alec Coleman placing a
very respectable 11th in 50mins 11secs.
