Lee and Sarah Triumph at Terling
36 Striders started this year’s Tour of Terling in dry, warm conditions. Missing a road sign was to prove costly to many competitors but proved no problem to the four pairs of eyes used by joint winners Mark Waine, James Neugebauer, Lee Martin and Mark Newton. Only Andy Kennedy ( Benfleet ) stopped the top ten being totally white and yellow with Andy Mason, Ian Cardy, Jamie Woodyard, Paul Anderson and Chris Beazeley in 6th to 10th positions. In 11th overall was first lady Tracey Woodyard.
The Strider count went up to 42 on Day 2 for the shorter and twistier course. This time it was 17 Striders in the top 20. The top 8 were Lee, Chris Burgoyne, Tim Brockington, Jamie, Andy M, James, Ian and Sarah Colbert with Tracey 10th. Andy Kennedy again stopped the yellow and whitewash (although he was allowed to start again with no penalty after going wrong at the first attempt).
With the joys of a Strider effort session to contend with only 30 Striders took on the most popular day of the tour, which included two multi terrain laps with two crossings of the famous Terling ford. Lee finished fourth behind Paul Molyneux, Mark Newton and Paul Dobson to cement his overall lead. The Striders again dominated the top ten with only James Heskey-Jones (Tiptree) in 8th spot. Nikki Brockbank was the top lady but Sarah claimed the same time to stay in the lead.
The final day saw only 21 club members take on the mileup/mile down races. Paul M won from Mark N with Lee, Tim and James next. Top lady was again Nikki B but it was not enough to topple Sarah.
Lee won the tour with a comfortable lead of almost ten minutes from James with Tim in fourth place. Sarah won her third tour title by almost 20 minutes over Nikki who had a mare on Monday night.
