The Springfield Striders

The Club is sociable road and cross country running club, with a strong interest in Fell and Trail Running. It was formed in May 1985 and now has a membership of approximately 170, of both men and women from the age of 16 upwards. We welcome runners of all abilities, from the complete beginner to the experienced runner wishing to compete in County and National Championships. We would welcome applications from disabled runners. The present membership ranges from those who only jog occasionally to improve their fitness to regular marathon runners.

In addition to the regular training Tuesday & Thursday evenings, some members meet on 9.00 a.m. Saturdays at Blake's Wood, Danbury for an off road run. On Sundays during the winter months there is a 9.00 a.m. training run from the club as a build-up for a spring marathon.

During the summer months, every other Wednesday from a pub on the outskirts of Chelmsford for a social run over footpaths and tracks. A beer and a meal at the end of the run are optional.

In the winter, the club runs in two cross country leagues where participating clubs take turns to organise a race. Other club events take place through out the year.

The club is affiliated to the Essex Amateur Athletics Association, the South of England Athletics Association, Amateur Athletic Association of England and UK Athletics for Road, Cross Country and Fell Running. (Qualifying members to reduced race entry fees).

Through the club members receive details of all the local road and cross country races. Teams from the Striders run in the County, South of England and National Championships. The London Marathon is a major event in our year, with normally 25+ runners taking part and 80 supporters operating a Drink Station at 13 miles.

The annual membership is £20 for adults and £10 for those in full time education payable on the 1st February. Reduced subscriptions are available for those who join part way through the year.

The club is run on a very informal basis and in a friendly atmosphere with most members staying for a chat and a drink after the Tuesday and Thursday evening runs. An eight to ten page newsletter is published about 6-8 times a year to keep members in touch with what is happening in the club.

If you would like to come along just turn up on a Thursday or contact John Elliott Tel. 01245 440780 e-mail by adding "secretary" to the front of @springfieldstriders.org.uk or Suzanne Kuyser on 01245 492594 for more details. Nobody will press you to join the first few times you come. For map showing the location of the club headquarters.

Anti-Doping Guidelines

Whist the majority of testing is carried out on international athletes, you should be aware that by taking part in any event run under Uk Athletics rules you are consenting to be available for testing.

The most important thing to remember is that the athlete is responsible for anything untoward that is found in your system,no matter now it got there. Ignorance is not a defence.

You should be aware that products sold over the counter for common aliments can also contain prohibited substances. In particular, many dietary supplements have been found to contain prohibited substances, we therefore advises you to exercise considerable caution in the use of such supplements. It is our belief that it is safest not to use them unless prescribed by your GP, at which time you should advise your Doctor that you are an athlete and that the contents of the prescribed supplement must not appear on the latest list of banned substances as issued by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Click on the
UK Athletics web site for the list of banned substances on the WADA list. Guidance on the treatment of common aliments can be found on the anti-doping section of the Uk Athletics web site.

If you are currently taking supplements, please ensure that they do not contain any of the listed substances. If in doubt, cease taking them and refer to your GP or the chemist where purchased.

You should also be aware that recreational drugs such as cannabis and its derivatives are also prohibited substances.

In certain situations, an athletic can use prescribed medication containing containing a prohibited substance, provided their use is registered with UkA. The most common example of this is the use of inhalers to control asthma. Some inhalers contain beta-2-agonists which are on the banned list. If you use one of these inhalers it use should be registered with the UkA. A simple form can be obtained from the UkA web site,
UK Athletics

Under IAAF and UkA rules, the individual athlete is responsible for anything that appears within their body system whether they have taken it knowingly or otherwise. The basis for the rules is that you should not put anything into your body without first being certain that the contents are within the rules of the sport.
