Clean Sweep (almost) at Felsted

The Felsted 10k is always a popular date in the July running calendar in Essex as it is also the Essex 10k championship race. A total of 41 Striders; 26 men and 15 women; turned up on a cloudy, reasonably windy, warm Sunday morning. The course is reasonably flat, with a couple of “undulations” throughout the pleasant lanes around Felsted

The ladies scooped the race and Essex championship team prize with Sam Bilbie, Jackie Stretton and Kate Mills.

Sam won third lady and Bronze Essex lady and also v35 silver for Essex. Kate won Gold v45 for the race and Essex. Sheila Macauley won Gold v65 for the race and Essex.

The men did well too; Mark Newton was beaten to 2nd place by an unattached runner, Alex Short.  However, although he was second, the first placed runner was not Essex qualified, so Mark scooped the Essex 10k championship trophy. Gavin Allen was Gold v40 male for the race and Essex. Mark, Gavin and teammate James Smith also picked up the Gold men’s team prize for the race and Essex.

Variety of events!

There were a large variety of events going on this weekend, with varying distances.

17 Striders competed in the Southend Half marathon; surprisingly few considering that this is the club championship race for half marathon. The day started off a bit sticky and then turned rainy towards the end of the race (unless you were super-fast!).

Our new half marathon champions are Alex Manton for the men, who completed in 1.18, and Sharon Bannister for the women, who completed in 1.47

The first three men were Alex, followed by Stuart Raven in 1.24 and Leon Webster in 1.27.

The first three ladies were Sharon, followed by Sarah Goodwin in 2.00, and Holly Thompson in 2.05.

Warm weekend

There weren’t many races on what turned out to be a warm weekend but, as always, Striders managed to run in some.

Gavin Allen and James Smith ventured up north to the Calderdale Way Ultra, which covers a total of 53.5 miles (although they got lost and did slightly more….) and included 8000m of ascent. They completed in 12h 27 and were the first male team!

Paul Bridges also did more than a marathon; the Shires and Spires 35 miler in Northamptonshire, which was a lot of off road and very hilly, he completed just after Darran Hull in 7h19.

Sarah Colbert and Rebecca Pittman both ran the Kirton 5 on Friday in Suffolk, organised by Felixstowe road runners. Sarah was 1st FV45 in a time of 34.57.

Sarah C then ran the Stour Valley Marathon on a hot Sunday; no results available yet.

Bank holiday weekend races here and there...

There was plenty of racing going on this bank holiday weekend; here, there and everywhere.

In no particular order….

On Sunday was the popular Hatfield Broad Oak 10k and 39 Striders completed the course. First man was Alex Manton in 14th (35.58), then Antony Goodall in 16th (36.07) and Stuart Raven in 34th (38.07). The ladies were led by Sam Bilbie as first lady overall in 38.44; Sam was also first FV35. Sam was followed by newly returned Liz Davies in 38.44 and second lady and Rachel Roughan in 44.10. These ladies won the first ladies team.

Sarah Colbert ran the Framlingham Friday 5 and smashed the ladies v45 5 mile club record as she ran a time of 34.51 – well done Sarah!

May Races

A handful of Striders (8 men and 2 ladies) ran the inaugural High Easter 10k race on Sunday. Gav Allen was 1st male in 34.30, followed by team mate James Smith in 2nd in 34.46. Alex Manton was 5th male and this gave them the first male team. Highest scoring Strider lady was Jenny Barrett as 7th lady in 48.40

A warm day saw a big turnout for the 2nd in the Royal routes trail series on Sunday and an excellent route enabled fast times for some. There was a choice of 2 routes; 5.7 miles and 8 miles

In the 5.7 miles our highest placed Strider was Richard Sirrett in 5th and for the Strider ladies Sarah Colbert in 9th (2nd lady)

In the 8 miles Roger Gooding was our first male Strider in 4th and Janet Hill first Strider lady in 24th.

Mark Newton was spotted on the TV running the Great Manchester Run 10k and ran a PB of 32.54. Mark was 34th man - nice one Mark!
