Spirit of London

Well that was the motto for London marathon this year as stated by the organisers.

This year 45 Striders (31 men and 14 ladies) started the 38th London marathon on what was to be the hottest day of the year so far, and the hottest London marathon to date. Most people would say that they ran slower times than they predicted due to this, but everyone who ran did really really well.

First Strider was Mark Newton, soon after running Ibiza marathon, yet still running 2.37 and overall 109th place. Also in the under 3 hours were Tom Cammock (2.50), James Wright (2.53) and Alex Manton (2.53). Stuart Raven and Alex Benson missed the 3 hour mark by 3 and 4 minutes respectively. 15 runners fell into the under 4 hours category, 17 in under 5, 5 in under 6 and 3 in under 7, which surely reflects the hot conditions out on the course.

Our first lady was Jackie Stretton in 3.07, closely followed by Nikki Brockbank also in 3.07. Third lady was Samantha Monk in 4.01.

Sam Cornforth started but did not finish after passing the halfway mark. Sam Bilbie thought she may have to DNF when she was suffering during the race, but thanks to help from another runner she managed to complete the course in 4.04. Damian Barrett ran (at least some of) it in bare feet - ouch on hot pavements and completed it in 3.54! Gabrielle Pearce, on her 18th birthday, completed her very first marathon in 5.37 whilst Nichola Norman completed her first marathon in 4.46. Dave Turk struggled on the day and is quoted as saying “it’s horrendous”, but not as much as Steve Brame who struggled with blisters from about mile 17 and hobbled his way back.

We must not forget the army of water station volunteers; to the advance team, who set up at (almost) the crack of dawn, to the volunteers handing out water to hot and thirsty runners; all of whom gave up their own time to do this. The club thank you all very much. We gave out nigh on 40000 bottles of water.
